2005-2006 ASB SELECTED
---

By Caroline Evans

On April 21, Valley Christian students were able to participate in democracy by electing the candidates for the 2005-2006 ASB. Thirty-eight candidates fought back nerves and tried to convince the student body to vote for them. Unfortunately, only 12 students were elected.

The run for Music Coordinator was up first. The music coordinator is responsible for playing music at Valley events. Niki Aquino, Laura Nystrom, and Holly Brown were the candidates. All the girls promised to listen to the students and play the best music possible. Nystrom was very creative and wrote her speech to a rap.

The next ASB position was Sports Commissioner. The Sports Commissioner is responsible for letting the school know when games are and encouraging people to go out and support the Warriors. There were only two candidates Austin Keeling and Mary Griffith. Both candidates showed their passion for the job they wanted. Griffith with some help of a few football players reenacted the Hail Mary against Serra earlier this year.

Three candidates came out at the chance to head the Community Service department of ASB. If elected their job is to let the students know of any available community service chances. Kiely Smith, Phong Huynh, and Haley Yoder were the candidates. All the candidates had both experience and connections to get the job done.

Kelly McMaster and Laurie Stribling were the only students running for their positions. McMaster ran for Internal Affairs and Stribling ran for Rally Coordinator.

Public Relations drew out five candidates; Liz Fenwick, Justeen Tomlinson, Trish Romanchuk, Nicole Nielson, and Jared Sisson. Public Relations make sure the school knows of events and encourages them to go. All the candidates promised that they could get the job done and had creative ideas. Nielson gave us a taste of her creativity by hearing a shirt that said, “Vote for me.”

Whitney Abke, Jeffy Can, Andrea Laing, and Abram Coestee tried to convince the students to elect them to the position of Chapel Music Coordinator. The Chapel Music Coordinator selects the music that will be played in chapel and leads the school in worship. Coestee had a friend who played the guitar during his speech. Laing told about her experience with the chapel band at school and at her church. Can made it clear he had the qualifications to do a good job. Abke showed her passion for music and for the Lord.

What do Ashleigh Ferrante, Matt Helder, Karina Mann, and Tyler Gonzales have in common? All of them ran for Chapel Coordinator. The Chapel Coordinator tries to get speakers for chapel. All of the candidates made good speeches. They spoke of their qualifications, desire to lead, and how much chapel is important to students.

Hoping the student body would elect them to ASB Treasurer, Kyla Power, Shelly Pund, and Mark Farhat, got up in front of the school. The Treasurer manages the money to aid in school events. All of them had leadership qualifications and the confidence that they could do the job.

Five people competed for the job of Secretary. The Secretary’s job is to take notes during ASB meetings and make sure things are on track. The candidates were Stephanie Stead, Erin Oswald, Nathan Goldsmith, and Lani Rasmussen. All the candidates emphasized that they were efficient note takers!

Alx Bear, Aimee D’hondt, Chris McElhatton, and Jake Viramontez wanted to be ASB vice president. All the candidates’ explained how they were concerned about the students and wanted to do their part to make next year fun. Viramontez entertained everyone with a funny video!

Four hopeful students sought the role of ASB president. Albino Garces, Eli Brill, Sara Rose, and Jeremy Georges were these hopeful students. The speeches were very thought-out and Brill got applause when he promised the students to try and get Starbucks and Jamba Juice on the school campus. Georges topped Brill by joking that he would install a helicopter pad at school, so instead of riding the bus to school, the students could ride the helicopter. He also joked and said he would make the tuition $50 dollars.
