RELAY FOR LIFE RAISES FUNDS
Event gathers thousands in the fight against cancer

By Stephanie Ringel

Over 20 years ago, one man decided to use his time to raise funds for a worthy cause. Dr. Gordy Klatt, of Tacoma, began what was known as the City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer. In this event he congregated a team to “run against cancer.” Today, although the name has changed to Relay For Life, the spirit and enthusiasm has remained the same. This event has developed into a dream Dr. Klatt had never expected. It is estimated that by the end of 2005, more than 20 countries will be participating in their own Relay For Life.

During this event, teams come together to run or walk to raise money for the American Cancer Society. This overnight event brings laughter as well as tears to all who witness its impact. During the day, team members will take turns circling the designated track. As the sun sets, adults, as well as children, will set up luminarias to recognize cancer survivors and victims. These simple bags filled with sand and candles symbolize hope for families and cancer patients everywhere. During the Luminaria Ceremony, as the bags are placed along the path, participants are able to see the many names that have been affected by cancer. It brings tears to many, but the spirit of the crowd brings encouragement to all.

It is easy to get involved in this inspirational event. Relay For Life takes place year-round and worldwide. To see what is going on in your area, visit www.cancer.org. For those in the San Jose area, the next event is coming up on April 30 thru May 1 at San Jose State University on the Tower Lawn, SJSU Campus. Another Relay For Life will be held on May 21 thru 22 starting at 10 am at the Morgan Hill Oakwood Country School on 105 John Wilson Way. For the Milpitas area, on June 24 thru 25 at 6 pm, this event will be at the Milpitas Sports Center on 1325 East Calaveras Blvd. If you are not able to participate in the relay, you can log on to www.cancer.org/donate to donate to this worthy cause.
