MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE -
THREE CHEERS FOR SWEET REVENGE
By Brian Elwell
Late last year My Chemical
Romance put out an average length CD that starts great, and ends
miserably. Even though I am not a fan of punk music, I did enjoy
the first half of the CD that was filled with hard-hitting guitar
chords while backed up by an average punk beat. The truth is that
it is extremely catchy punk music that gets stuck in your head,
but you like it.
As I said the CD starts out awesome with their best song, “Helena,”
with one of the most musically appeasing chorus I have ever heard.
Thankfully the band has come back to the roots of what punk music
really is, instead of going with the current, almost but not quite
“Emo” genera. As the CD progresses through you realize
that it has a lot of variety, and that none of the songs sound
the same. The band dodged a bullet and does not have the trite
sound that most punk does today.
But then comes the problem in the CD; you reach track 5 and it
just goes downhill from there. The fresh punk sound diminishes
and it is replaced by an annoying Blink 182 rip off, which is
really disappointing. When first listening it sounds like a band
that isn’t just shooting for singles with a bunch of fluff,
but then the listener realizes that they just put all the fluff
in the back and put the good stuff up front. If you enjoy punk
and are looking for a new fix this is the CD for you. Let me stress
this point, I love the first 4 or 5 songs, but the other 8 songs
are not worth buying the CD. If you’re looking for a new
hard-hitting, rock out song, download “Helena.” It
is easily one of my new favorite songs.
