Varsity Baseball
Starting off the Season on a Roll
By Kylie Gifford
Baseball season is in full
swing, and with a current league record of 5-2 and a five-game
winning streak, the varsity team is definitely shaking things
up in the WCAL.
At the Valley Christian Crown Classic on March 26, the Warriors
faced one opponent after the other. Pioneer proved to be no challenge,
reflected in the Warriors’ 11-1 victory. A 4-2 win over
Santa Clara and a 9-2 victory over Leigh led to the most challenging
games of the tournament.
In a tough game against archrival Bellarmine College Prep, the
Warriors came up short with a final score of 2-6. At the end of
the day, Valley Christian came up solid in second place.
The league season continued on April 5 with the first game against
Archbishop Mitty. An intense game resulted in a 0-3 loss, but
the Warriors were not discouraged. A few short days later, they
came up with a 2-0 victory against Archbishop Riordan, followed
closely by a 5-0 defeat of Sacred Heart Cathedral.
On April 20, Valley got another shot at the number one team in
the league. As the Warriors took the field against the Bellarmine
Bells, no one knew what to expect. The Warriors came up with a
7-5 victory, knocking the Bells from their first place position
in the WCAL.
The Warriors continued their winning streak over the next few
games. A 10-5 victory was the result of the battle against Saint
Ignatius on April 14; the next day, Valley played an intense game
against Serra, pulling through to gain a close win of 10-9.
Unfortunately, the team lost 4-3 in a nailbiter to Mitty on April
26, yet the team is undaunted.
Junior Eddie Ibanez explained that the success so far this season
has been due to the fact that “we’ve been playing
with a lot of heart and drive this year, and we’ve just
had a lot of pride for our school.” This pride is evident
every time the varsity baseball players set foot on the diamond.
