Varsity Girls Swimming
SETTING A PRECEDENT, STILL
LOOKING FORWARD

By Sarah Marr

This year the varsity girls swim team has surpassed many goals they have set for themselves and has been forcing many talented West Catholic teams to take notice of the VC Warriors. This years group of girls has a great deal of senior leadership as well as many outstanding underclassmen. It has been this winning combination that has helped Valley reach their aspiration. What makes this years success even more satisfying to the swimming program is the fact that just a mere 6 years ago the VC swimmers had never won a meet and now, they are considered a league powerhouse. So far this season the girls have fought hard to be undefeated in all of their league meets, beating previous rivals such as Archbishop Mitty 98-87, and St. Francis by a score of 114-72. Every meet the girls are breaking previously set records and pushing themselves to be even better. What can the girls varsity swim team attribute their success to? Coach Cathy Manthey commented, “God has blessed us with a awesome group of athletes who work hard and keep getting better every year.”

The home meet on April 14 against Sacred Heart Cathedral was particularly special to the girls because it was Senior Day. This day was a tribute to the senior team members who will be graduating at the end of the year. The seven senior girls were honored by their teammates and coaches Jerry Bozzo and Cathy Manthey, who gave the girls a book to help guide them with their Christian walk with God. It was a day to remember for everyone involved and to top it off the girls smashed Sacred Heart Cathedral by a score of 142-38. When asked about the day, senior captain Heather McKinney commented, “It was sad to realize my years of swimming at Valley are almost over, but I am so excited about the success we have been having this season and I know it will carry over into CCS.” As a whole the girls varsity swim team has been leaving a legacy for those to come and is looking forward to more achievements in CCS.
