VC RUGBY
By Nick Richards
On Saturday April 9 the
rugby club played their last game of the season against Live Oak.
The rugby club played hard and with much enthusiasm.
Both teams played well and did not seem to have too much trouble
playing against each other. The Valley Christian rugby club had
excellent scrums and lineouts. Once again the scrums for the Valley
Christian rugby club seemed to dominate. The scrums were well
put together by the props, Ben Jones and Mark Ruby, the locks,
Boris Taratuin and John Adams, flankers, John Lane and Jeff Walters
and the hooker DJ Avilucea Mark Ruby who plays the position as
prop said, “Over this year the scrums have been well put
together. Every now and then the scrums will be bound together
bad. However we have won the majority of the scrums.” He
also said “the line outs tend to go well for us too. Their
were only a few games where we did not do good in the lineouts
but for the most part the scrums and the lineouts went really
well for us.” In the last game the hooker did an excellent
job hooking and the locks and flankers did really well in holding
up the scrum. The lineouts whee also well put together even though
in the last game both teams had to play the lineout in a strange
way. Instead of jumping into the tunnel then up to catch the ball
the locks had to jump strait up. One off the people who really
excelled in the lineouts was John Adams who was the lock. He did
an excellent job getting the ball and passing it of to the scrum
half. The flankers and position as prop; props also did well holding
up the props while the hooker passed the ball.
The backs also played well with some excellent tackles. A man
who did really well tackling was Scott Cody. Scott said, “tackling
someone is one of the greatest feeling in rugby.” Another
member who really excelled at tackling was James Toombs who went
to Valley Christian last year. James would do exactly what the
coach had taught on how to tackle. He excelled in tackling because
he would go and tackle the legs of the opposing player.
After the game the rugby teams came together to elect the top
players of the game. The people who were elected the top players
of the game were Ben Jones for the forwards, who plays the position
as prop; for the back the player who was elected was Andrew Decker
who plays the position as scrum half. After that, both teams enjoyed
some sandwiches brought by the Valley Christian.
