Dealing with Rejection

by Erin Parker and Lucas Paule

So you got that letter in the mail. It looks like a medium size envelope. There’s hope. You are so excited. It is your dream school. You open the letter and read the words excitedly, “Sorry, we could not offer you admission...”

You pause, wondering if this letter just has the wrong address, and you pinch yourself to see if this is real. REJECTION. Everyone experiences it, but sometimes it can be hard when it’s the college of your dreams. What do you do now? First of all, your life is not over…wait, let’s repeat that. Your life is NOT over.

While waiting for college acceptances can be exciting, it can also be very disappointing. Not everyone can get into their top choice school, but there are thousands of different schools that may be the right choice for you. Many colleges offer really good programs that can still offer you a good education with the major of your interest.

If you do become rejected from your top choice, you can also work hard at whatever college you do get into and transfer later. The other important thing to remember is that although getting into a good school is helpful, the only person who can really benefit from your chances in life is yourself. You make or break who you are going to be. Even at a good college, if you don’t work hard you won’t go anywhere.

Just because you were not accepted does not mean that you were not qualified. Many people get rejected and still become successful. Remember, Walt Disney was fired from his first job because he had a “lack of ideas.” You have it in you to be whatever you want to be no matter where you attend, as long as your heart is in it. Keep on truckin’ soldier!
