JV Boys Basketball
by Ryan Eshoff
With a year of seasoning
under their belts, the JV boys basketball team moves on to the
next level of West Catholic Athletic League competition. The team
has begun its hard work and preparation for this season, a season
which they hope will build upon last year’s. Playing in
the WCAL, the toughest freshmen division in the state of California,
is an overwhelming experience. However, the team looks to use
its year of experience to improve upon last year’s win total.
Leading the way for the Warriors is head coach Forrest Coffman.
He will have a team of sophomores including starters Michael Lampkin,
Taylor Valenzuela, Aaron Hutton, Jesse Estrada and Aaron Grayson.
They began play with a November 20 scrimmage against Piedmont
Hills. Against Piedmont, the team battled in a physically tough
game. Valley came up short in the scrimmage, but they will use
the game as a building block for the rest of the season.
Valley’s JV squad officially initiated their season against
North Salinas on November 30. The game was a defensive battle,
and in the end it was the Warriors’ offense that broke through
with solid execution and good free-throw shooting down the stretch.
Valley overcame North Salinas 37-29. Valenzuela led the scoring
with 11 points. The team hopes their win results in some momentum
for the rest of the preseason.
