Varsity Boys Soccer: Coming
Together to Win!
by Alisa Walsh
Yes, it’s that time
of year again. The time of year when twenty-two carefully selected
boys can be seen parading around campus in various Valley Christian
athletic get-ups, snickering at any who dare question their authority.
This collection of young men is known as the Valley Christian
varsity boys soccer team, and they are proud of it. They do have
reason to brag, as last year’s team was league champions,
shared with the Bellarmine Bells.
League champs last year? No biggie. They’re going all the
way this year. Yes, that’s right, the varsity boys soccer
team hopes to capture the CCS title, much like their girl counter
parts of last season. The pre season began November 20 in San
Francisco with the Saint Ignatious Jamboree. The boys played three
shortened games against Mitty, Riordan, and Sacred Heat Cathedral
and came out with 0-0 ties both games, in part due to the absence
of star players Ben Hansen and Ryan Corry, both who were still
playing football, along with various other player injuries. Two
days later, the team traveled to Leigh High School where they
battled the Longhorns to unfortunately come out with a loss. Senior
Cole Bales scored the only goal for VC of the game with a penalty
kick into the upper right corner.
The Homestead Christmas Cup thus began on November 27 against
top ranked Santa Cruz. After early morning practices over the
Thanksgiving holidays, the boys came together and came out with
a 3-3 tie. Goal scorers were senior Andrew Smith and junior Joey
Stryker. Senior forward Chase Harrell said about the game, “We
dominated the whole time. They got away with two lucky goals that
should have never been scored. They’ll be sorry the next
time they play us.” League play officially began yesterday
against Saint Francis and continues tomorrow against Saint Ignatius.
This year’s team promises to have potential to do great
things this season, so don’t miss out on any exciting games
that are sure to occur.
