Focusing in On: VC Rugby
by Nick Richard
Rugby is a fun sport, that
is often misunderstood. Rugby is a sport that a lot of people
are trying out for the first time this year. A lot of people may
think rugby is a brutal and tough sport however a person is more
likely to get a serious injury in many other sports than in Rugby.
Unlike many contact sports a rugby tackle requires technique.
A rugby tackle is more like a takedown move in wrestling, than
a monster hit you might see in hockey or in football. However
a person in rugby may get more bumps and bruises but that is understandable
because the game is a contact sport. Mark Ruby a returning player
for the Rugby team says “lots of improvement lots of guys
have tried out for the team this year its a lot of fun.”
Even though the rugby team is only in its 3rd full week of practice
every one on the team new players and old players seem to be enjoying
themselves and enjoying the game. The new players are having fun
just learning this new sport. The old players are having fun once
again playing this sport. Also all the players on the team seem
like they are going to stay committed to the team and are having
a good time playing.
VCHS Rugby’s head coach, Mike Annab, said the season will
be challenging, but this year’s team seems to be more dedicated
and more focused, providing a good foundation for competitive
rugby. “There is a sense that these guys are brothers, and
that they are wiling to work together to glorify Christ through
athletics. I’m thrilled to be a part of that.”
The VCHS Rugby Club will play its first match, a preseason game,
in San Francisco on January 30 against the Golden Gate High School
Rugby Club.
Prospective player are encouraged to come check out VCHS Rugby.
They practice Tuesdays and Thursdays at Great Oaks Park, near
the Skyway Campus, from 3:30 to 5:00. Everyone is welcome.
