CCS
Champs
Warrior Football
Takes Section Title
by Kylie Gifford

Varsity Warrior football blew away its competition, Bellarmine,
Pioneer, and Palma, in each round of the CCS playoffs.
Valley Christian continues its
reign over WCAL football with their fourth consecutive CCS title,
concluding the 2005 season as Open Division Champions with a record
of 12-1.
The Warriors faced the Saint Francis Lancers on November 4 in what
was undoubtedly the most anticipated game of the season. Stepping
onto the field under their own lights, the team had been preparing
to face the Lancers—ranked first in the league—all season, determined
to leave nothing to chance.
Proving unstoppable once again, Dominique Hunsucker was the leading
rusher for the Warriors, gaining 92 yards throughout the game, followed
closely by Mike Ginther with 80 yards. Quarterback Dante Perez completed
five of six passes for a total of 90 yards, including touchdown passes
to Ginther and Brian North.
On defense, Valley Christian made the most of every opportunity to
keep back the Lancers. Sacks by Cameron Compton, J.J. Kulusich, and
AJ Alvarez contributed to Saint Francis losses, and interceptions
by Jake Walker and Michael Giancola
kept the ball under the control of the Warriors. Valley Christian
defeated the Lancers 20-7, claiming their place as first in the league.
Valley faced Bellarmine for the second time this season in the first
game of CCS playoffs on November 18. Hunsucker slipped through Bellarmine
defense throughout the game, gaining 154 yards and two touchdowns
for the Warriors. Once again, Ginther was not far behind with 115
yards and one touchdown pass thrown by Perez, who completed nine of
ten passes for 140 yards. Two of these passes were caught by North
and Julian Castaneda, increasing the Warriors’ lead.
Alvarez led the defense with 11 tackles, followed by Compton with
six. Kulusich, Angelo Brown, and Ryan Gardner
each made sacks against Bellarmine, furthering Valley Christian’s
dominance. The game concluded with a final score of 41-14, and the
Warriors moved on to face their next opponent in the semifinal game.
Pioneer was Valley’s contender for the advancement to the championship.
San Jose City College hosted the game on November 25, and the Warriors
came prepared to continue their season-long string of victories.
Once again, the offensive leaders of the game were Hunsucker, with
15 carries for 171 yards and four touchdowns, and Ginther with 91
yards. North also played a key role in the game with 83 yards and
a kickoff return for a touchdown. Two of Perez’s six completions were
caught by Castaneda for 37 yards, making him the leading receiver
of the game.
Led once more by Alvarez with 16 tackles and one sack, Valley Christian’s
defense was unbreakable. Walker, Castaneda, Compton, and Mark
Castelo led the team in tackles, while Kulusich, Joseph
Vasquez, and Jeremy Georges each made sacks
to push the Mustangs back towards their own territory. The team’s
efforts combined to result in a 38-13 victory, and the Warriors headed
to the championship.
The culmination of the season—and for the seniors, their high school
football careers—took place on December 2 as the Warriors took the
field against Palma ready to defend their title. Continuing to lead
Valley Christian offense, Hunsucker and Ginther each scored two touchdowns
and gained a combined 220 yards. Georges, with 14 yards, returned
an interception for another Warrior touchdown.
Alvarez, Kulusich, and Walker headed the defensive efforts. Quarterback
sacks by Gardner and Georges as well as interceptions by Compton and
Castaneda contributed to the yielding of a mere 109 yards to the Chieftains.
The final game of the season ended with a 35-14 victory for the Warriors—coincidentally
the same score of Valley Christian’s championship game last year against
Los Gatos.
Coach Mike Machado commented, “It’s been a great
year. The coach from Palma likened our team to the 2003 De La Salle
Champions, and that’s quite a compliment.” The WCAL season has come
to a close with Valley Christian as the four-time reigning champion;
congratulations to the team and the coaches for another amazing year
of Warrior football.

JV Boys Soccer: Starting
Fresh
Usually, the boys J.V. roster is filled with quite a few freshmen.
As there is no freshmen soccer team, it is not at all unusual to see
some of Valley's newest students squaring off against some teams,
like Mitty and Bellarmine, who are chock full of sophomores and even
juniors. Naturally, putting freshman and juniors together seems slightly...
unfair. Things are going to be different this year.

Teacher Survey: Most
Embarrassing Holiday Moment?
Embarassing moments happen to everyone. They are not something
you can avoid or prevent, they are just part of life that most people
have learned to accept and shake off. Christmas brings joy but it
can also bring several embarrassing moments that a majority of people
would much rather forget. The events of Christmas such as the putting
up of the Christmas tree, or maybe trying to put together some of
the presents that say "assembly required" can bring those
most memorable Christmas moments.
