French
Riots Cause Chaos Across Country
by Erin Parker

In the month of November France
has suffered from violent riots instigated by the young minority citizens
of France.
The minority youths, who felt discrimination against themselves, reacted
in a series of car burning and destruction of property. The arsonists
have stopped at nothing, including churches, schools, and places that
the youth felt impacted them directly.
The riots started on October 27 when two teenage North Africans were
electrocuted while hiding in an electric power station from the police.
Although an investigation is going on, as to whether or not the police
were actually following the two, no final conclusion has been made.
Dominique De Vellipen, the Prime Minister of France, declared on November
7 that France would do more to allow the deprived youth better rights.
It is the hope of France that with the acquired power, the youth will
do more to restore peace and justice within the community.
The Prime minister also recognized that France must do more to respect
the different public citizens of France. France had a law that stated
Muslim girls were forbidden to wear veils in public schools. In a
quote by De Vellipen to CNN, he stated, “We must struggle against
discrimination. Everyone’s behavior must change. ... We must have
a welcoming republic where everyone must be respected.”
Currently there were over 57,000 polled who had suffered from long-term
unemployment. Over 10,000 cars have been burned, 200 buildings have
been reportedly burned, and 4,500 people have been arrested.
On November 21 a state of emergency was declared for a three month
extended period. President Jacques Chirac stressed on November 14
for the people of France to end the “poison” of discrimination in
France. A plan to help over 50,000 youth find training in various
job fields is a plan the president hopes to be running in 2007.
The United States issued a warning for tourists to not visit certain
areas that the youth have declared “no-go” zones. Other countries
including Britain, Germany, and Australia soon followed suit.
These riots are said to have been the worst urban rioting seen in
France in almost 40 years. The prime minister is making plans to tighten
immigration controls.
France hopes that with its plans for the future this problem of prejudice
will never rise again.

JV Boys Soccer: Starting
Fresh
Usually, the boys J.V. roster is filled with quite a few freshmen.
As there is no freshmen soccer team, it is not at all unusual to see
some of Valley's newest students squaring off against some teams,
like Mitty and Bellarmine, who are chock full of sophomores and even
juniors. Naturally, putting freshman and juniors together seems slightly...
unfair. Things are going to be different this year.

Teacher Survey: Most
Embarrassing Holiday Moment?
Embarassing moments happen to everyone. They are not something
you can avoid or prevent, they are just part of life that most people
have learned to accept and shake off. Christmas brings joy but it
can also bring several embarrassing moments that a majority of people
would much rather forget. The events of Christmas such as the putting
up of the Christmas tree, or maybe trying to put together some of
the presents that say "assembly required" can bring those
most memorable Christmas moments.
