JV Boy Soccer: Starting Fresh
by Chris McElhatton

Usually, the boys J.V. roster is filled with quite a few freshmen. As no there is no freshman soccer team, it is not at all unusual to see some of Valley’s newest students squaring off against some teams, like Mitty and Bellarmine, who are chock full of sophomores and even juniors. Naturally, putting freshman and juniors together seems slightly… unfair. Things are going to be different this year.
Utilizing the skills of new boys J.V. Coach Ronald Jenkins, the teams’ competitiveness is dramatically increasing. Ronald, a former player for the varsity squad now attending San Jose State University, has the boys working hard.
Right from the start of the tryouts, it was obvious something was different. Usually greeted with only a handful of new recruits, the new coach walked out on the field to see almost thirty players strapping on their gear, and getting ready to play.
Things have only been getting better since. With many fresh new legs, and some serious skill emerging, the team reared up for the pre-season opener in the Lynbrook Tournament.
Losing their first match against a tough Gilroy opponent, the J.V. team geared themselves up to dominate their next game against Lynbrook, smashing their way to a 3-1 victory. The first goal came with a well-placed ball into the box by freshman Jake Joseph, which was skillfully trapped by sophomore Devin Rigg, who then put the ball home, scoring the first goal of the year for the J.V. team. Excited about their first half, sophomore George Fahmy and junior Aaron Hutton.
“It was an exciting game” Coach Jenkins said. “The boys played well and got what they deserved. This was the first win of many this season.”
