T'was the Night Before Finals...
By Corban Fennell, Kiley Brinkman, and Ryan Gray

T’was the night before finals and I couldn’t sleep,
The only thing to do was study and weep.
I knew they were coming and I thought I’d prepared,
but now they drew closer and I felt quite scared.
I thought to myself, it’s not fair and not right,
that I should be forced to study all night.
Who are these who think they can give tests to me?
My mind should be empty so I can think and feel free!
My thoughts are prisoners and stuck in my head,
And because of them I can’t get to bed
Study this and that and now I don’t care
To not take the final as my choice would be fair
So I huffed and puffed and was angry all night
And when the sun rose I was in for a fright…
-Ryan Gray

Many students at VCS can relate to the character in this poem. Students often spend time venting the night before, frustrated with the situation at hand…finals. Many students try to pull some sort of “all-nighter.” Listed below are a few tips to help you better prepare for finals:
1. Make sure your study space is quite and comfortable. Try to avoid studying in noisy places such as lounges or recreation rooms.
2. Take study breaks away from you study space. Use that break to think about other things, not to review what you have just studied.
3. Prioritize your work! Make a list of what you need to study, prioritize that list, and stick to it.
4. Have everything you need for studying handy before you begin. Don’t waste valuable study time trying to find books and notes.
5. Try to get as much sleep as possible the night before finals. You will do better on your tests if you are well rested.
6. Don’t panic! Remember that as important as finals are, they are only worth a percentage of your total grade.
7. Stop trying to cram five minutes before your test. This time should be used to relax, catch your breath, and get focused.
8. Stay calm during the test. If you don’t know the answer to a question, skip it and come back later. You will gain momentum by answering the questions you know first, and by the end, you will be more confident to answer the more difficult questions.
9. Keep a positive attitude! Tell yourself that you are well prepared and take the test one question at a time.
10. When the test is over, let it go! If you think you did poorly on the test, move on, and go enjoy the break. Don’t waste your time worrying about how you did. Remember that worrying about your grade won’t change it, and chances are, if you were well prepared and followed good study tips, you did well anyway!

JV Boys Soccer: Starting Fresh
Usually, the boys J.V. roster is filled with quite a few freshmen. As there is no freshmen soccer team, it is not at all unusual to see some of Valley's newest students squaring off against some teams, like Mitty and Bellarmine, who are chock full of sophomores and even juniors. Naturally, putting freshman and juniors together seems slightly... unfair. Things are going to be different this year.
