VC Sports: San Jose Sharks Host High School Sportswriters Day
by Ryan Eshoff
On Saturday,
November 12, the San Jose Sharks hosted a group of 11 teenage sportswriters,
giving us the chance to step into the shoes of a professional sportswriter
covering a hockey game. This surreal opportunity was an absolute blast
for me from both an average young fan’s perspective, as well as a
budding sportswriter. And what better way to interest teenagers than
to provide free food? Getting the chance to eat in the press room
provided some fascinating exposure to various media members involved
with the Sharks. It was the best chicken marinara I have ever tasted.
One of the highlights of the night was the chance to interview Sharks
General Manager Doug Wilson and beat writer Victor Chi simultaneously.
I appreciated how open they were to our inquiring minds. It was the
sturdiest handshake I have ever received from a professional GM.
BOOM! PING! THUD! SWOOSH! I am either at an onomatopoeia seminar or
behind the net during the Sharks warm-ups. As part of the night, we
were allowed to observe the team’s pre-game “shootaround”, up close
and personal. It is really a different world. Not only can you capture
every emotion on a player’s face, you can experience the full force
of an NHL slap-shot hitting the protective glass. I emphasize protective.
It was the closest thing to a gunshot I have ever heard at a sporting
event.
To all aspiring sportswriters out there, I highly encourage you to
not develop acrophobia-fear of heights-if you want to pursue this
profession. In all seriousness, the opportunity to view the game from
the upper press box is quite a thrill. You are able to take in every
single piece of the action of not only the game, but also the benches
and anything of interest in the crowd. It was the most comfortable
I have ever felt suspended 200 feet above water and men with sharp
sticks.
The game featured a climactic finish, with the Dallas Stars defeating
the Sharks 3-2 in a shootout, one of sports’ most exciting scenarios.
The post-game festivities featured an interview with the aforementioned
McLaren, and then the Sharks bade us a congratulatory farewell and
good luck. Thanks to their generosity, a gaggle of aspiring sportswriters
were able to experience a dream night. For those interested in media
careers, don’t be afraid to get involved!

JV Boys Soccer: Starting
Fresh
Usually, the boys J.V. roster is filled with quite a few freshmen.
As there is no freshmen soccer team, it is not at all unusual to see
some of Valley's newest students squaring off against some teams,
like Mitty and Bellarmine, who are chock full of sophomores and even
juniors. Naturally, putting freshman and juniors together seems slightly...
unfair. Things are going to be different this year.

Teacher Survey: Most
Embarrassing Holiday Moment?
Embarassing moments happen to everyone. They are not something
you can avoid or prevent, they are just part of life that most people
have learned to accept and shake off. Christmas brings joy but it
can also bring several embarrassing moments that a majority of people
would much rather forget. The events of Christmas such as the putting
up of the Christmas tree, or maybe trying to put together some of
the presents that say "assembly required" can bring those
most memorable Christmas moments.
