Spotlight Athlete of the Month: Austin Keeling
By Adam Hill

There are very few athletes that might be considered a leader. Austin Keeling is a senior soccer player at Valley Christian High School. Being an ASB member and a captain on the soccer team are only a few things that Keeling has done to be known as a leader. Keeling also shows a Christian like conduct and extreme athletic abilities as he takes on opposing teams.
Keeling first became interested in the game of soccer at a young age after watching it on television and having friends around him who loved the game. As he has grown, he has become closer and closer to the Lord. David Beckham, a professional soccer player, is one who Keeling looks up to. After intense year round practicing, Keeling made varsity as a sophomore and has been starting ever since, and this year, the team elected him to be one of their captains.
“I think that Austin will be one of the top players in the WCAL this year,” said Coach John Basanese, “his touch on the ball is very good, and his shot is about as dangerous as they get.” Keeling has mastered his trademark shot, called the “fiery dart.” He has one goal and two assists in his career at Valley as a defensive midfielder. He has proven time and time again that he can be the man to trust. Last year, Keeling made the shot of his life against Serra High School to make it a 1 to 0 game. That game clinched a place in the CCS playoffs for the team.
Keeling works hard and keeps a positive attitude, along with a Christian-like attitude. He plays and trains year round, hoping to get his chance at colleges, such as San Diego State, Santa Barbara, or Cal Poly.

JV Boys Soccer: Starting Fresh
Usually, the boys J.V. roster is filled with quite a few freshmen. As there is no freshmen soccer team, it is not at all unusual to see some of Valley's newest students squaring off against some teams, like Mitty and Bellarmine, who are chock full of sophomores and even juniors. Naturally, putting freshman and juniors together seems slightly... unfair. Things are going to be different this year.
