VC Cross Country Conquers CCS
By Kylie Gifford

On November 12, Valley Christian’s own varsity cross country girls, as well as varsity boys runner Peter Osuna, stepped up to the starting line of the 2.95-mile Crystal Springs course in Belmont for the CCS league finals race.
As a fairly small team, Valley Christian competed in Division 4 of the WCAL. Senior Peter Osuna was the sole representative from Valley in the varsity boys’ race. He ran a time of 17:39, finishing in 43rd place out of 73 boys.
The varsity girls’ team finished fifth out of the fourteen teams in this division. Freshman Jennifer Bergman took first place out of over 400 girls in the varsity race with a time of 17:53 and achieved the fifth fastest time ever run by a freshman girl at the Crystal Springs course. Following close behind Bergman was fellow freshman Poppy Lawman with a time of 18:50. Both girls qualified for the State meet based on their outstanding times.
The unstoppable freshman duo and their coaches traveled to Fresno to compete in the 2005 CIF State Cross Country Championship on November 26. Once again, they represented Valley Christian in the Division 4 race, competing against 184 of the top runners in the state. Lawman covered the 3.1-mile course in 19:42, finishing in 26th place. Bergman took fourth place in the race with a time of 18:35; with this time, she concluded the day in 34th place out of the over 900 girls from all divisions of the meet. Congratulations to both girls for their remarkable end to an amazing season.
Overall, the 2005 Cross Country season was one of Valley Christian’s best, for both runners and coaches. As Coach Jonathan Lee explains, “Our theme this year was ‘conquering mountains’. I believe we did just that. We had a lot of individual successes, some low points, but in the end I believe we are at the summit looking toward the amazing future that the Lord has in store for all of us.”

JV Boys Soccer: Starting Fresh
Usually, the boys J.V. roster is filled with quite a few freshmen. As there is no freshmen soccer team, it is not at all unusual to see some of Valley's newest students squaring off against some teams, like Mitty and Bellarmine, who are chock full of sophomores and even juniors. Naturally, putting freshman and juniors together seems slightly... unfair. Things are going to be different this year.
