Christian Music Review: The Classic Crime. Wait, What?

by David Wang

The Classic Crime may immediately seem like a secular band that plays punk or “screamo” music, but in truth, this is a great alternative Christian rock band.

Lead guitarist Justin Duque was a regular kid in high school who grew up listening to his dad’s favorite bands, which included Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. High school connected Justin with TCC’s drummer, Paul Erickson. Their passion for the Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, and Nirvana brought them to the band Orizon where they met Matt Macdonald (vocals) and Alan Clark (bass). Once Robbie Negrin (guitar) joined their band, they thought it was the time to change their name.

The Classic Crime has a tone that is similar to Thrice, the Lost Prophets, Senses Fail, and a lower pitched Saosin. The songs have a sense of similarity to a lot of alternative rock music that exist. The best part of their music is that each of their songs reaches out to a variety of music tastes without losing continuity between the songs. Their number one song, “The Coldest Heart,” has been constantly played on Air1 along with mainstream radio stations. The lyrics do not have direct connections to their faith like other Christian bands, but the words are clean and clear. Christian or not, The Classic Crime is a solid band that will appeal to any music fan.
