Born to Run: Girls Cross Country Team Leaves Mark on State Championships

by Jenn Elias and Adam Hill

For the men, the special date was November 1, but fortunately for the girls it was postponed until after the state finals. The girls team placed 11 out of the 24 teams in the state championships. Only the second team from Valley to make it to state in the recent years made coach’s Jonathan Lee and Johanna Wans-Fogolin very proud.

Individual efforts from sophomore Jennifer Bergman and junior Morgan Celaya finished 7 and 42 respectively of all 191 runners in the state competition. Both coaches commented not only on their athletic abilities but also upon their unique humbleness.

Sophomore Matt Meyers of the boys team stated, “We get along great like a big family. We sing as we run. Disney songs mostly.” Nothing could break the bond between these runners or their coach. “Coach Lee makes us look forward to practice every day,” yelled one of the runners.

A team of 7 is one of the smallest teams in the state, leaving them a step behind all other teams. Despite their size, the team took home the title of the Mount Sac Invitational in Los Angeles. Before coming home, they couldn’t spend time in L.A. without visiting the infamous Disneyland.

CCS was held in Toro Park located in Salinas, where the girls ran an extraneous 3.1 mile run in the cold and rainy weather. Their 3rd place in the CCS race qualified them to state finals where Bergman ran 7 seconds slower than last year, yet running the second fastest time ever by a Warrior cross country runner in state finals.

The successful cross country season left all runners with an everlasting imprint that will never fade no matter how many courses they run or practices they partake in. High expectations are upon the girls in the 2007 season.
