December Devotion: The Gift of Love

by Kaitlyn Baker

“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you… a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. –Luke 2:11-12 It was a cold, dark night, in a dirty, dusty stable crowded with animals. It was still and calm. It was in a rigid feeding trough filled with straw. There was no magnificent cradle or grand celebration. This was how our Savior entered the world. This was the gift of love.

God, the Creator of the universe, the ruler of all nations, the one and only King, chose to enter the world in this lowly manner. The humility of Christ’s birth is one of the many ways God has shown His love for us. He didn’t have to redeem us, or come to earth to face mankind’s rejection, mockery, and scorn. He didn’t have to endure brutal torture and death on a cross in order to save us from our sins. He didn’t have to be born in a manger in an old stable behind an inn. But He chose to do exactly that. That is the greatest gift we will ever be offered. God’s unconditional love and saving grace are the gifts He offers you this holiday season. Christmas isn’t about the decorations, Santa Claus, family meals, or gift-giving. It’s about a still, peaceful night when a baby was born in the manger of a stable. It’s about the night our Savior, Jesus Christ, was born in the most humble manner imaginable. It’s about the night the man, who later suffered excruciating death on a cross in order to redeem us, came into the world. He came for you and me. And this is the greatest Christmas gift ever given.
