Young Girls Hoops Open With Big Wins

by Ryan Eshoff

Despite the influx of underclasswomen on the varsity girls basketball squad, both the JV and freshmen teams look to have exciting and productive seasons. Not only are the girls still inexperienced at the high school level, the freshman team features new coaches in VC alumni Becky McIntire and Dustin Watson. The JV squad is led by Dennis Brown, a veteran of the VC girls basketball program.

Tuesday, December 5 proved a triumphant day for the girls program, with each team taking home a crucial non-league victory. While the JV team routed Monterey High School 47-23, the freshman edged Anchorpoint Christian High School in a tough defensive struggle, 20-16.

Led by junior Sherine Zahra and a bevy of sophomores and freshmen, the JV team looks to handle their remaining preseason opponents while preparing for WCAL play. The freshmen team, hoping to make a name for themselves in their initial high school season, are led by Courtney Rypstra, Lexie Hausmann, and Jasmine Butler. The two teams face a variety of non-league foes throughout December before beginning WCAL competition the first week of January.
