Another winter season has come and with the cold weather comes JV boys soccer. Coaches Dan Benton and Kevin McIntire work the boys hard to get them in shape for their upcoming season. To prepare for their season, the team has numerous pre-season games. On November 20 the team played against Gunn High School. It was a long and hard game, but the team came up short and lost the game with a score of 5 to 4.
The Lynbrook tournament started on November 25. The JV Boys team played their first game against Wilcox High School, the team ended the game with an easy win. Josh Rothenberg, junior, scored one of the four goals. Goalie Ben Christian, freshmen, kept Wilcox scoreless and led the team to a shut out. In the second game of the tournament the Warriors played against Oak Grove. The game ended in a 2 to 2 tie with both goals scored by sophomore, Ryan Kim and assist by sophomore, Britt Nelson.
The team had another Pre-Season game against Leland High on November 30. The Warriors played their best and came out with a 2-1 win. Goals were scored by sophomore, Trevor Plugg, and Rothenberg. Starting defender, Jacob Ruiz, sophomore, helped out the defense and the team kept Leland down to only one goal. The team had their first season game at home against Mitty on December 7. The Warrior offense kept pressuring the keeper, but didn’t manage to get the ball behind the net. The final score ended as 2-0 Mitty.
This year’s JV soccer team has high expectations and a very high skill level. Nelson stated, “The team will be very competitive and with Coach Benton’s knowledge of the game and his innovative practice drills we will keep on getting better.” The team is out on the soccer field practicing every day after school and over the Thanksgiving and Christmas break. Ruiz goals for his team are for, “everyone to improve their skills and to come away with a good record.” The WCAL playoffs are coming up in January and the JV boys soccer team is practicing to bring Valley Christian the win.
