JV Girls Squad Learning Ins and Outs of WCAL Soccer

by Kylie Gifford

The start of the winter sports season has been an exciting time for this year’s JV girls soccer team. The girls have begun this season with the determination and dedication they will need to succeed in the WCAL.

The girls got their chance to get a taste for what they would be up against this season in their first non-league game against Monta Vista on December 5. For the thirteen freshmen on the team, this game marked the beginning of a VC soccer career. Though the girls played a great game and were able to get comfortable working together on the field, they were unable to overcome their opponent, resulting in a 0-2 loss. This game, however, gave them the experience they needed to begin league season with confidence.

The next game against Mitty proved to be another challenge for the Warriors. While the girls kept up the intensity throughout the duration of the game, they found Monarch defense difficult to defeat. Though the end of the game brought a loss for the Warriors, their resolve was not thwarted.

The Warriors went on to play Sacred Heart Cathedral a short two days later. Though they did not have much time to prepare for this game, the girls knew that they had the ability to keep up with their opponent. Their hard work, coupled with their intensity on the field, enabled the girls to overcome Sacred Heart and earn their first win of the season with a final score of 1-0.

The JV girls look forward to the rest of the season. Their last win has given them the momentum to move up the ranks of the WCAL. Sophomore C.J. Wrye is excited for what is to come. “I think it’s going to be a good year,” she said. “We’ve got a lot of new talent on the team, and that’s definitely going to help us do well this season.” The Warriors are working on developing this talent and using it to their advantage as they come up against some of the most difficult teams in the WCAL.
