A frigid wind ushered fog onto the field during Preliminary Competition Saturday night, November 18 as the band poured their hearts into their penultimate show. Valley received third place with a score of 90.18 trailing Clovis and Beyer High Schools. All three bands were within a margin of only two points, so a fierce competition was anticipated during Finals the next day. During Finals, Valley performed another stunning show and was awarded a score of 91.79. At awards, the band anxiously awaited the results and was thrilled to surpass Clovis. Valley Christian was awarded first place, being second only to Beyer who won the desirous Sweepstakes award with an incredible score of 93.48.
This has been an extraordinary year for the marching band. With an ingenious show design, the marching band was set up for success from the beginning. Furthermore, unprecedented competition drove the group to practice and work with a new dedication. During the 2005 season, the band was defeated by Beyer and Aliso Niguel and was eager to do better during the 2006 season. This year, Valley and Beyer worked incredibly hard, each motivated by the other. Valley strove for, and reached excellence in the pursuit of last year’s champions.
For some, the season went by in the blink of an eye while others thought it would never end. Regardless, this season is over, and the Valley Christian Marching Band and Color Guard will never be the same. The seniors are moving on, and it is now up to the rest of the band to step up and fill in the gaps. All the seniors ask of the rest of the band is to remember this year’s theme by being luminaries for the rest of their years.
Even though the 2006 field show season is over, there are still many activities and events in store for the band. In early December, the band joined with the marching bands of Live Oak and Gilroy to form the Silicon Valley All-Star Band that performed in the San Jose Christmas Parade on December 3. Additionally, the band is looking forward to a trip to Asia in February. They will visit Thailand, Hong Kong, and Singapore on their journey and, along the way, meet with missionaries and visit orphanages to show God’s light to those who need it.
