Seniors, What are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?

by Anna Iuppa

I’m going to take this article in a slightly different direction than the past two college-advice columns. Instead of offering essay advice or some standardized test-taking tips, here are some suggestions if a four-year college is not for you.

Sometimes the best way to get a jump on the job market is to try a vocational or career school. If you know what profession you would like to pursue and a specialized school is the best way to go about achieving your goal, go for it! Once you receive your diploma and start working, you can gain experience through internships or different positions.

Another option for your post-graduate experience might require a bit of money, but it is well worth it. It is travel! Imagine what astounding growth can take place when you are on your own and experiencing new people and places. With the right amount of money, whether already saved or earned during the summer after graduation, you can travel to exotic locations like Barcelona, Spain; Saigon, Vietnam; or Sydney, Australia. The possibilities are endless even with a small amount of change in your pocket. Shy away from tourist attractions and take this time in your life to explore new worlds, learn valuable lessons, and discover things you never knew about yourself.

If neither of these two ideas appeals to you, maybe all you need is a break. Sometimes a year off to collect your thoughts and figure out your next move is the best decision you can make concerning your post-graduation experience. Just because all the seniors are pushed and rushed in one direction does not mean that it is not wise to take a step back and think about your next move. After all, the years after high school make up a bold new chapter that should be the best years of your life. Take your time when deciding your next move.

The message I hope you leave with is that there is no “right” path after high school. For most people, four-year or two-year colleges is a great fit, but for others, different options, like vocational school, traveling, or a year off  can offer just as fulfilling of an experience. So take some time by yourself, away from all of the pressures from school and family, and figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life.
