The varsity boys basketball team sets out for an eminent new start of their soon-to-be remembered season. A dominant victory over Gilroy High School left the team with high hopes of a remarkable season.
“We are going to win CCS this year,” said starting guard Austin Simon, “after that, we are going to have our eyes set toward Nor Cal, then STATE.” The team has other teams trembling at their youth (they start one senior, two juniors and two sophomores). This year’s team is stacked with dominant players all around. The speed and aggression this team takes with them to their opponents almost always result in a victory.
The resurgence of the boys varsity basketball team is fierce after settling for second in the CCS championship game last year. This year, the team started off superbly against Gilroy High School to open the new season. A 63-47 victory was sparked by leading scorer sophomore Tim Harris who had 21 points and senior Andrew Daou with 3 three-point goals and a total of 15 points.
Thursday, December 7 was the opening day of the West Coast Classic here at Valley Christian High School against the Hercules Titans, with a dominant victory of 98-65. “It’s hard for teams to know who to stop when we’re out there because any one of us could get hot and score a lot of points,” said Daou with 17 points.
Game two for the Warriors faced Mt. Eden of Hayward with picture perfect play from both offense and defense. “I try to come in and make the other post players really have to work hard to score,” said senior Mike Lampkin, “and tonight I was able to help force some turnovers out of our press too.” The Warriors defeated Mt. Eden 84-61 in the semifinal game to set Valley’s eyes toward a very respectable Foothill team.
Foothill overcame the aggression of the Warriors 74-66 in the championship game of some of the best teams in the state. The Warriors contained a total of four players scoring double digits: Justin Walker 10, Harris 21, Simon 10, Daou 10. Unfortunately for the strong-willed Warriors, Foothill nailed almost every shot attempted.
Tonight the Warriors take on McClymonds High School, a very strong team in Oakland. Stay tuned for the next home game on Wednesday against North Salinas!
