Welcome to the Bay: A’s Moving to Fremont

by Tommy Burns and Ramanan Kulasingham

Everyone seems to be due for a change in their life now days, The Oakland A’s felt the same way. The Athletics hope to mark a new beginning for the A’s, and a new era of baseball.

The A’s have recently purchased 143 acres in Fremont, and are teaming up with Cisco systems for their new state-of-the-art stadium. Lew Wolff The Athletics owner and managing partner, commented on the new ballpark, “The ballpark will be named Cisco Field as part of a 30-year naming rights agreement with one of the world’s leading companies. The location of the ballpark allows us to significantly expand our fan base and take advantage of the tremendous marketing and corporate sponsorship opportunities offered in the Silicon Valley and beyond.”

The new stadium will take 24-36 months to build, and will cost 400-500 million dollars to build. The stadium will be able to seat 32-36,000 fans. It will be the smallest ballpark in Major League Baseball, so there will not be a bad seat in the house, giving fans a more intimate feeling. Lew Wolff also said, “this is the stadium of the future.” It will give fans the opportunity to order food from the seats via their cell phones, watch instant replays using specially designed handheld devices and allow fans to use their cell phones as a ticket stub.

Much fan excitement has grown for the Athletics moving to Fremont. Senior Sebastian Tucker explained, “I am really glad that the A’s are moving to Fremont; they have moved out of Oakland so now I will go and see them, plus they’re closer in the “Yay Area” to me so I am happy about that, and will continue to be a A’s fan for life.” Since the park is so small, tickets sales will be scarce. This also makes tickets hard to find and sold out games are to be expected. The A’s hope to meet everyone’s expectations for the 2012 season, but one thing is for sure, the future looks bright for the Athletics organization.
