Freezing Weather for VC Students

by Brittney Tanori

For many of VC students and the rest of San Jose residents, the days and nights have gotten so cold that house pipes freeze, crops are freezing while farmers are losing many of their crops due to the extreme cold weather and frost. Although it is the beginning of February, and winter has not yet started to down pour rain, the frost and the cold weather will begin in the night until the morning. While many VC students arrive early in the morning for class, it is a good idea to dress warmly for the day and to stay healthy.

The local news channels alerted the Bay Area residents to cover their plants with tarp, and bring in their animals. The temperatures have gotten into the low 20s. The state took an uncommon step of alerting all local health departments and social service agencies and nursing homes to monitor those who might be vulnerable to effects of the cold. Homeless shelters across the Bay Area expected a crowd of homeless people looking for beds to be safe and warm for at least a few nights. While many of the California residents are using more electricity by using heaters, they will also be paying more for the crop prices that are going to skyrocket. “California’s Citrus Growers say they could lose up to $1 billion in fruit because of the cold weather. Two consecutive nights of freezing temperatures left oranges locked in layers of ice,” said KRON 4 The Bay Area’s News Station.

As for the rest of the United States, the northeast coast’s temperatures are below 20s to 30s, with snow showers over the great lakes with wind chills. While the Midwest are between 10s and 30s in the early hours, as the day warms up, the temperatures rise to the mid 40s and 50s. Many of these temperatures during this time are usual for the east coast and Midwest resident but as for the Northern California public, especially the Bay Area, this is extreme cold weather.
