2008 Choices
Many predict future Presidents
By Nick Richard
Although the 2004 presidential
elections just concluded, the media is already talking about possible
candidates for the 2008 presidential elections. For the Democratic
Party, Barack Obama, Howard Dean, and Hillary Clinton are generating
the most “buzz.”. For the Republican Party the leading
candidates people are Florida governor, Jeb Bush, former NYC Mayor
Rudy Giuliani, and Senator John McCain.
The rising young star of the Democratic Party is Barack Obama.
On the topic of education, Obama said that a good public education
is the greatest hope for millions of American children. He has
continually fought for increasing education funds. He has also
been fighting strong for the American worker and believes in tax
reliefs for working families. When asked if he will be running
in 2008 Obama said, “as of right now I am not running but
only time will tell.”
Howard Dean is the man who ran in the 2004 primaries against John
Kerry and was commonly known for the “Dean scream.”
When asked if he was going to run for president Dean said only
time would tell. In an interview in Rolling Stone Magazine, Howard
Dean was asked a few questions. He was asked, “Why did your
campaign flame out so quickly,” His response was, “I
didn’t know anything about running for president.”
Howard Dean was then asked, “What about the scream?”
Dean explained, “It was mangled by television. It was the
kind of speech I gave all the time. None of the press corps who
were following me thought much of it, but the cable TV editors
thought it was great to see me making a fool of myself.”
Hilary Clinton is a very possible candidate for the 2008 election.
Hillary Clinton’s political life began in 1993 when President
Clinton asked her to take up the task on National Health Care
Reform. Even though her plan for universal health care failed,
she raised public awareness concerning health care. After the
terrorist attacks in 2001, Hillary Clinton worked hard to secure
$21.4 billion for the clean up and recovery at ground zero.
In 2008 another member of the Bush family is rumored to be considering
running for the 2008 presidential office: Florida governor Jeb
Bush. Since Governor Bush came into office, his top priority was
to create a world-class education system. Governor Bush has reduced
the state’s tax to the lowest it has been in decades. He
is also one of the few Republicans to be reelected in Florida
for two consecutive terms.
The other Republican member that is considered a possible candidate
for the presidential office is former New York City Mayor Rudy
Giuliani. Rudy Guliani is highly regarded for his handling of
the chaos in New York on September 11. When Giuliani first came
into office, his first task was to reduce the crime rate in New
York. People started to see New York as a low-crime metropolis.
He also had an aggressive real estate policy. Because of this
he transformed Times Square from a rundown tourist attraction
to a high-priced district with a number of family stores.
John McCain, U.S. senator from Arizona is yet another possible
candidate for the Republican party. When McCain was seventeen,
he followed in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps
to the U.S. Naval academy at Annapolis where he began a lifetime
of service and dedication to America. McCain was formerly Lt.
Commander McCain in the Vietnam War. In 1997 John McClain was
awarded Time Magazine’s 15 most influential people of the
year. John McCain does not necessarily fit into any political
wing. McClain claims to be more conservative on military and social
issues and more liberal in fiscal issues. He had previously fought
against the constructing of an aircraft carrier and said the money
should be spent on the enlisted who were on food stamps. He is
strongly pro-life and equally strongly against tobacco.
Even though the elections are over and most of us weren’t
old enough to vote, in the next election the majority of the students
at this school will be voting, so stay informed!
