Mini iPod
It's the new Furby

By Taryn Gifford

Every year there is the supreme Christmas present, the gift of all gifts that everyone on earth wants, the gift that surfaces at schools everywhere in January. A few years back the craze was Furbies, and before that it was Tomagatchis, pogs and Pikachus. 2005’s new Furby is none other than the Apple iPod.

What most people don’t realize is that the larger iPods have been around for a while, but have only recently become the must-have item they are now, most likely because the older iPods have been changed and improved. The hottest of all iPods, the mini iPods, were released on February 13 2004, and have been selling like hotcakes. Who wouldn’t want a mini iPod? Not only are they petite and portable, but they also come in silver, pink, blue, green, and gold, and can store hundreds of songs. They come with a charger to plug into your computer or laptop, and they come with a pair of headphones as well. Perhaps Apple’s most ingenious idea, however, was to capitalize on the popularity of the iPod and design and produce iPod accessories. You can buy anything to dress up your iPod, from little iPod socks (so the face of the iPod doesn’t get scratched) to bulkier iPod cases.

How exactly does the iPod work? An iPod is like an mp3 player than can be plugged into your computer, but it is important to make sure that the computer you first use to put music on your iPod is the computer that you will always use to transport music to your iPod; if you bounce around from computer to computer, you will lose all the songs that you had previously stored. The reason behind this is to stand in accordance to music pirating laws. You can put all of your favorite CDs onto your iPod; even burned ones, or you can purchase music on your computer from Apple iTunes. Once you have gotten all your songs onto your iPod, you can create playlists, which are great if you are going on a long trip. And, the beauty of the iPod is that once you grow tired of the songs you have on it, you can erase some songs and throw new ones on.

In the future, the iPod will most likely grow even more popular. Apple has been creating new mp3 type products, like the U2 iPod and a new, smaller iPod that goes for about $100 as opposed to the mini iPods that run in the mid two-hundreds. So run with the urge to go buy an iPod, it’s definitely worth it, and buy an iPod sock, too!
