Winter Sports Rally a
Success
By Kylie Gifford
With the winter sports season
in full swing, the rally on January 14 sparked a new excitement
for each of the sports with a few intense competitions that were
nothing short of comical.
Seniors Jeff Rogers and John Irby started the rally off with a
fierce basketball battle. But the sumo twist on the game made
for nonstop laughs as the two opponents struggled to get the ball
even remotely close to the basket, confined by the enormous sumo
suits. The game resulted in a tie, due to both players’
inability to get the ball high enough into the air to actually
get it in the net.
More basketball followed with a dunk contest between senior Jerry
Cotton and freshmen guys’ basketball coach Scott Reeves.
While both guys put up a good fight, Cotton was clearly the victor.
But it wouldn’t have been a worthwhile contest without a
little showing off; Cotton displayed his skill by jumping over
two students lying on the ground to slam the ball in the basket.
After seniors Colin Maher and Dave Lyons slipped into their sumo
suits, the soccer battle began. Following a short struggle to
control the ball, Maher scored the first goal, but Lyons answered
right back. In the end, Maher was the champion.
The final competition of the day was a traditional sumo wrestling
battle. As senior Paula Luu struggled to peek out from under her
helmet to see her opponent, senior Laura Tomforde, the crowd looked
on in amusement. Every thud of a fallen competitor was answered
with a roar of laughter from the spectators."
The rally was a fun way to end the week and acknowledge the winter
sports teams. The season continues for all of the teams, so come
on out and show some support!
