Varsity Girls Basketball
SECOND HALF OF WCAL TO BE AN EXCITING ONE
By Alex Farrokhian
The varsity girls basketball
team is deep into their season and working hard to showcase their
talents. The girls are currently 8-10 overall, fighting for their
wins and never giving up any easy losses. Known for their heart
and the skill with which they play, these girls have become a
presence both in the West Catholic league and the general basketball
community.
Early in the season the girls had big win against Notre Dame with
a solid win of 40-37. They also played Presentation (50-34), Sacred
Heart Cathedral (43-14), Saint Francis (47-16), and Saint Ignatius
(57-22). A close loss to Archbishop Mitty on January 19, brought
the girls’ league record to 1-5. A challenging season has
allowed a few of the players to really shine. Junior Lacey Banks
is currently ranked seventh in league for her free throw shot
percentage of about 61%, she is also ranked in eleventh place
for two point field shots taken. These combined accomplishments
have earned her the place as the eighth leading scorer in the
West Catholic league, averaging about ten points per game. The
varsity girls are also a rebounding force to be dealt with, with
two team members making the top ten list for total rebounds, Alissa
Hayden in eighth and Dahyls Marshall in tenth. The girls’
season will extend into February which leaves plenty of playing
time for them to show what they are made of.
