Movie Review: Glory Road
By Tori Bergland and Jenn Elias

Known as one of the greatest college basketball upsets in sports history, Glory Road, depicts the story of a previously terrible Texas Western basketball team transformed in 1966. Josh Lucas, also seen in Sweet Home Alabama, stars as Don Haskins. This Hall of Famer’s dedication and devotion to his team made, as some would call it, one of the biggest changes in college basketball.
As Coach Lucas takes on his new responsibility, he believes that it is time to do what he feels best in order to lead the underdog Miners to victory. This special team stood out because it was the first Division 1 team to allow racial variety. The team in its entirety struggled constantly because of this change. They were publicly humiliated even to the point of abuse. Coach Josh Lucas also put his family into danger when his wife had to deal daily with threats, due to his position as the head coach.
Moreover, with the assistance of Bobby Joe Hill, played by Derek Luke, the team became stronger on the court, but not off. This was due to his rebellion. The many long practices of running sprints shaped the entire team into a more disciplined family. The boys dealt with outside distractions such as partying, girls, and discrimination. Despite everything they were all able to get through together.
The big test came at the end of the season in the final college basketball tournament for the title. They would play their rival school, the Kentucky Wildcats, coached by the well-known Adolph Rupp. In this final game, Coach Josh Lucas was faced with a choice dealing with the lineup, where his final decision would surprise all who witnessed this championship game.
