New Year's Storm Devastates Homeowners
By Adam Hill

Over New Year’s, Northern California experienced many mud slides, a lot of flooding, closing of some major highways, yet not many injured. The storms caused many power shortages, tree damages and left many houses and mobile homes filled with water.
Many rivers and creeks throughout California rose over the banks and flowed into some cities, causing flooding. In Guerneville, the Russian River rose 14 feet over the flood stage, causing many evacuations. The flooding caused many mobile homes to be swept off their foundations.
Mud slides caused many major highways to close, including 101 and Interstate 5 and 80. Mud slides also covered many homes and farms. Several tractors and cars were trapped in mud slides or under fallen trees or debris. Reno, Nevada had one billion dollars worth of damage. Many homeowners in northern California were told they should evacuate to higher or safer grounds. In some places, including El Dorado County, the governor issued a state of emergency alert.
California governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger promised many counties he would do what he can to receive as much money as possible for the storms. He also promised to ask President Bush for financial aid to improved flood-control preparations and other storm preventions.
Through all of the damage the west has gone through, there were hardly any injuries, and no deaths. Some say this storm was the worst since February of 2005 when the state suffered twenty deaths.
