In recent years, the underclass girls basketball program at Valley Christian has struggled to find success in the ever-competitive WCAL. All that has changed, as the J.V. girls team is well on its way to the most successful season ever for a VC squad at that level.
Led by Coach Dennis Brown, a veteran of the program, the team has meshed into a cohesive unit. In addition to the new rank of sophomores, the team consists of junior Sherine Zahra and standout freshmen Brenna Holloway and Erica Villareal.
The girls began their league season against the Presentation Panthers. In a tough defensive struggle, Presentation came out on top, 26-23. Looking to rebound (literally) against perennial power Sacred Heart, the girls came out focused and energized, and emerged victorious 33-30. With games on January 10 and 12 against two of the league’s top teams, the girls knew they were in for a tough test.
Against the powerful Monarchs of Mitty, the girls fell 41-15, and to Notre Dame-Belmont they lost 43-21. However, the girls bounced back against Sacred Heart Prep, with Villareal and Holloway leading the way in a 41-17 win. The squad followed that game with a 28-24 victory over St. Francis, before seeing their small run come to an end with a 39-22 defeat at the hands of St. Ignatius. Looking to even their record at .500, the Lady Warriors traveled to Presentation to begin the second half of the season, coming out with a well-fought 39-31 triumph over the Panthers.
