SWIMMING AND DIVING
Boys Performing Well
By Meryl Fulinara
The first sign of warmth
marks the beginning of Varsity Boy’s Swimming. And according
to its team captains, Matthew Thesiner and Mike Grizzle, “I
think that we’ll do really well, we have a lot of potential.”
There are many talented swimmers on this year’s team, and
they believe many participants of this year’s team will
go on to swim in CCS.
The team agrees that they rely on coach Cathy Manthey for much
needed inspiration as well as teammate Jordan Ajlouny, who is
quaintly nicknamed “Pigeon Toed”. As for this year’s
coach, Kathy Manthy, she is pushing the boys as hard as they can
go, having them swim 7,000 yards every practice. Senior Mike Grizzle
explained, “Practice is hard, but good.” Most of the
swimmers said, “ The biggest benefit to being on the swim
team is the fact that it helps you stay in shape and gives you
a good tan.”
This year’s team is getting along great, and they are much
more united then last year’s team. Hopefully the bond between
all of the teammates will drive them all to a CCS ranking. All
have agreed that the bus rides to the meets are the highlights
of the season. Senior Mike Grizzle explained, “There is
too much team bonding going on.”
The newest addition to the Valley Christian swim team, Colin Maher,
exceeded expectations and met the CCS qualifying time with a margin
of .16 hundredths of a second in the 200 Free Relay swimming with
Mike Grizzle, Jacob Young, and Andrew Kikuta. Valley Christian
also took the victory on March 11 winning 117-63 over Archbishop
Mitty. With such talented swimmers like junior Andrew Kikuta and
freshman Kevin Parizi, the swim teams season looks like a bright
one.
The swimmers on Valley Christian’s swim team don’t
expect much of a crowd during meets, so show them your support
and cheer them on at their next home game!
