Varsity Girls Swimming
Off the blocks like true stars
By Sarah Marr
The Varsity Girls Swim team
is ready to dive into another successful season. Head Coach Jerry
Bozzo has formed a new team full of ability and they are ready
to compete.
The girls have been practicing diligently since early February
with tough afternoon practices and a select few disciplined swimmers
were gung-ho enough to pull themselves out of bed everyday to
attend additional morning practices. Hardworking senior Leslie
Hatcher commented, “Practice is my favorite part of the
day”. This year’s varsity team is full of new freshman
talents, who have hopes of creating a legacy for even more success
in the future. The team’s first non-league meet was held
on March 3 against San Benito High School, who came all the way
from Hollister for the meet. The varsity girls won the meet, making
sure to begin their season strong. In the girls first West Catholic
Meet they faced off against Archbishop Mitty and decisively defeated
the monarchs. The girls even had a few record breaking races,
including a new record set by junior Christina Shilling, in the
200m medley relay. This year the varsity girls received new swimsuits.
Come out to a meet and see them sporting their navy blue suits
with white and baby blue stars. This seasons team captains Heather
McKinney, Kelsi Okuda, and Amy Syres are providing awesome leadership
for the girls and are looking forward to having a great season.
With many challenging meets ahead of them, the girls varsity swim
team is sure to step to the challenge. Hopeful and confident senior
Jen Alderette commented, “Our team has improved tremendously
since last season. This year we are even better than the boys!”
