J.V. Boys End Successful Season of Growth

by Ryan Eshoff

In a soon-to-be-released motion picture, a massive tidal wave wreaks havoc upon passengers of a luxurious cruise liner. And on relatively the same scale, the members of the junior varsity boys swim team have sunk the hopes of many of their WCAL rivals. Just as a tidal wave picks up speed as it nears its target, so has the JV boys swim team gained momentum as it approaches the end of the season.

Winners of three straight, the guys evened their league mark at 3-3. After demolishing Riordan, the Warriors hosted Junipero Serra on April 6. Although the match was slightly closer in margin of victory this time around, the VC boys swimmers proved triumphant, securing a 92-78 win. Sophomore captains Josh Shemeta and Jonathan Grizzle led by example, combining to win 5 individual events.

The Warriors continued their recent surge against Sacred Heart Prep. In a tightly contested match, VC proved to have more heart, energy, and strength at the end, pulling off a narrow 87-83 triumph. Their regular season concluded with a splash against perennial rival Archbishop Mitty. The expected close match resulted in a 94-82 Mitty victory. Although the guys would have preferred a season-ending win, they refuse to let the final defeat sour their great season.

On Saturday, May 6, the Warrior swimmers participated in league finals. Many of the guys posted impressive results, with Shemeta posting a 3rd-place finish in the 50 free and the relay team cutting three seconds off their previous best time.

“This has been a season of both success, and of growth,” remarked Shemeta. “We were able to develop some inexperienced swimmers in addition to contending for the league title.”
