How to Make Friends in College

By Brittany Kelly

Most high school seniors have no idea what is in store for them in their college years, they have all grown up in homes and communities familiar to them with parents, guardians, friends and family. Many seniors are about to live in a world unknown to them, with new faces and new opportunities. College is the time to be socially active and meet as many people as you can.

It’s important to be approachable, talkative, expressive, easygoing and sociable when meeting new people. Always introduce yourself in classes and in your dorm, trying not to be shy. A great way to meet new people is at Freshmen orientation, so make sure to mark your calendar and show up on time. Remember that everyone feels the same way you do, so don’t feel like you are alone. Bring your cell phone or palm at orientation and take down people’s names and numbers and keep in contact with them.

On the first day of school there are numerous opportunities to reach out to new people and make friends. Help roommates unpack, and find things you may have in common. Once school has started, attend sport events, rallies and social gatherings. Also, join clubs, sign up for anything that interests you and you are automatically placing yourself in an environment with people with similar interests.

Keep in mind that your campus is going to make it as easy as possible for freshmen tomeet friends by organizing events such as ice-cream socials!
