Movie Review: The Benchwarmers

by Sarah Reinartz

“The Benchwarmers,” starring Rob Schneider, Jon Heder and David Spade is a family fun comedy all about friendship and companionship. The three main characters of the film, Gus (Schneider), Clark (Heder) and Richie (Spade) are grown up nerds who come together to form a baseball team to challenge the town’s little league champs.

In the movie, these three men create their team to bring justice to all nerds and show the world that being teased as a young child can truly be damaging. Millionaire man Mel (played by Jon Lovitz) hears about this through his son who is also bullied, and he offers to sponsor their team. They begin playing the little league teams throughout their town and end up dominating. Mel decides that he will make a tournament for the little league teams and the “three older guys” and offer a free, fully equipped baseball stadium to whichever team wins the tournament. They go through and battle off each team with enthusiasm and skill. Gus mainly wins the games for them with homerun after homerun and strike out after strike out, while Clark and Richie are just there to have fun and do their best. They defeat each team, one after the other and end up winning the stadium for themselves and the rest of the young nerds.

In the end, all of the geeks and “cool” people (both adults and children) learn the value of friendship and they learn not to tease other people but to befriend them instead. This movie is an excellent movie for both adults and children to see. It will keep you laughing and smiling all the way until the end credits. And even then there are amusing outtakes to continue your entertainment on your way out of the theater. So for a lighthearted, funny movie to see with your friends or family, go straight to “The Benchwarmers.”
