Tina Marie Challenges Students

by Erin Parker

Chapel speakers always pray that their message leaves a mark on students' lives, and for chapel speaker Tina Marie, her message caused a variety of discussions for students around the school.

On April 12, Tina Marie Holewinski came to Valley Christian for a second time to explain to students the truth about the lies in the media they are constantly being subjected to. Tina Marie stated, "I'm sick of seeing youth being lied to. I am  sick of seeing them not reaching their full potential."

She began by sharing with students that abstinence is the only way to truly be safe. This message was also accompanied by a multimedia movie that revealed the lyrics of songs by popular idols as well as images of people who are addicted to drugs. "I thought that she was overpowering because she approached the topics in a way that was too much for me," stated junior Joyce Yoo. "I thought that she was a little dramatic, but the message that she was trying to send us got through well." For junior Jamie Harris, she felt that Tina Marieís message was fantastic. "Tina Marie is a great speaker! She is dead on with her points and facts, and I love listening to her speak." All students had a different reaction to Tina Marie's energetic mannerism, but they felt that overall her message was meaningful.

Talking about videogames was something that many students had disagreements on with Tina. However, Tina stated that she doesn't believe that everyone is going to shoot someone because they play a violent game. "What we must realize is that we invest our time in playing a game, and in investing our time we are promoting  sex, killing, [and] dealing. Playing these games will not help with [a student's] future and [students] don't realize cash and time is being invested into something that will not be of a benefit." Tina believed that doing these things are not bringing you close to God, and she came up with an example she thought related to this message. "If you eat Cheetos for the next three years, youíll die of a heart attack. If you feed on negative entertainment you will kill the Holy Spirit within you. Be selective what you fill your life with."

Tina Marie sees all of the problems with teen culture, and she decided when she was sixteen years old that she wanted to make a change. Tina Marie encourages all students to "get out and be involved; Open your eyes to problems and help others around you." A quote by Zig Zigler that Tina Marie sticks by is, "If you help as many people as possible, they get what they want, and you will get what you want."

One statement that Tina Marie left with students to think about was, "If Jesus was sitting next to you, would He agree with what you are doing? If not, refrain from doing it. People need to stand up for the truth and stand up for what's right!"
