Varsity Baseball Becomes a State Power, Readies Itself for CCS Battles

   by Brittany Brinkman

The Varsity Baseball team has had a very successful season.  The team has become very close, and it shows in the way they play together.  Senior Mike Williams said, “the senior’s leadership this year was the best.  However the season ends, we can call it a success.”

The Warriors had their annual senior game against Serra on Thursday May 5.  At the game, seniors were honored for their dedication to the team.  The varsity boys played awesome, but they were not able to secure a win against the very tough Serra.

The Valley Warriors were able to secure two rounds in the WCAL tournament.  The first game was against St. Ignatius.  The team fought hard and was able to beat the Wildcats.  The second round game was against the powerful Serra Padres.  Valley, again, played great, but was defeated.  Even though they did not win the tournament, the Warriors worked hard and made it extremely far.

The Varsity team played their first CCS Division I Tournament round on Wednesday May 17.  The Warriors played the Menlo Atherton Bears on the hot spring day.  Junior Kevin Miller, as pitcher, threw a shut out game.  Another junior, Justin McPherson, scored the first two runs, and senior Jarrod Swanson hit him in both times.  Senior Mike Williams, while playing left field, robbed the Bears of a home run.   They all played together extremely well, and won the game 5-0.

The team’s great season is coming to a close.  They have all played extremely well together.  Senior Danny Brassfield stated, “at the beginning of the year the team was left with a lot of questions, but after the first 15 games we realized that our capabilities would result in a successful season.”  The Varsity Baseball team has played a great season, and their success is commended by everyone at Valley Christian.
