Rauschnot, Jones Star for Varsity Softball

   by Sarah Reinartz

Finally! The rain took a break and gave varsity softball a chance to make up some games and begin to work their way to CCS. It was difficult to get in the necessary number of games to make CCS with the excessive rain dampening the season. However, games were played almost everyday now to get caught up.

On April 10, the varsity played an unfamiliar high school, Gulliver Prep all the way from Florida! They traveled all the way from the sunshine state to play not only Valley, but also other Bay Area high schools. However, the Lady Warriors did not give them an opportunity to win the game. Valley beat them 4-2 with a double by Chana’e Jones and Christina Satalino and Kaitlyn Rauschnot pitching the game with seven strikeouts.

Their first game against Mitty this season turned out as a loss for Valley, but it was a well-played game that was lost in the 10th inning of the game during an international tiebreaker. Mitty scored the winning run on a base hit. However, Brittany Hendrickson went 2 for 4 and Carissa Lim hit a double.

The Livermore Stampede Tournament was hosted from April 20-22. On Thursday, April 20, their first game was against Foothill High School. They won the game 3-2 where Jones had 3 singles and 2 RBI’s and also hit in the winning run of the game. Freshman right fielder Codie Sawyer also hit the tying run on a base hit. The second game of the day was against Alhambra, which was a 1-0 win, where Lim hit in Jones to win the game. Third game of the tournament, on April 21, was against Castro Valley. This game turned out as a win for the lady warriors as well. Hendrickson went 2 for 3, Abbott slammed two triples with 3 RBI’s, Lim also contributed with a double and two singles and Rauschnot had two singles to add to their 9-2 victory. On April 22 the Lady Warriors  played Monte Vista and won once again 2-0 to place them in the championship game against Mitty. For the first time in Valley Christian girls softball history, the Varsity girls’ team defeated Mitty 6-4! Contributing to this amazing win was Satalino with a triple and two RBI’s, Abbot also with a triple and two RBI’s, and Rauschnot pitching with six strikeouts. They beat Mitty to win first place in the tournament. Kaitlyn Rauschnot received MVP for the tournament, and Chana’e Jones received the all tournament award.

Since the tournament, they played Saint Ignatius on April 24. They won the game 7-1 with a triple by Hendrickson and a grand slam by Abbott. Rauschnot also pitched to eleven strikeouts obtaining the state player of the week after the tournament and  becoming number four in California. The Mercury News also named Chana’e athlete of the week.

During the second game against Mitty, Rauschnot went 2 for 3 as the ladies faced the unfortunate loss of 3-10. However, they recovered on April 26 when they creamed Sacred Heart Prep 20-1. Ashley Frost pitched in the game with four strikeouts. Lim hit a triple and had three RBI’s as well. On May 1, they faced Sacred Heart Cathedral. They won the game 13-0 with another triple by Lim, a double by Rauschnot, and a double by Sawyer.

On May 2 Valley had a tough game against Presentation where they went into extra innings and ended up losing the game 1-2 in the 8th inning. Jones went 2 for 4 with a double and a single, Hendrickson had a single and Lim had another double.
