Mastery of the game of golf requires considerable repetition and frequent rounds of practice. Fortunately, with the recent return of long-awaited sunshine, the VC golf team took to their season with new vigor.
“Playing in great weather sure makes the game a lot more enjoyable,” said sophomore Ryan Forsyth, one of the top golfers on the JV squad.
Faced with daunting competition, the varsity Warriors have seen every match turn into a hard-fought struggle.
“It’s tough,” stated sophomore Matt Warnock. “Obviously we don’t have the number of wins that we would like to have at this point, but at the same time, you have to look beyond wins and losses.”
On April 6, the team traveled to San Francisco to face the St. Ignatius Wildcats. While the varsity team suffered a heartbreaking defeat, falling, 211-215, the junior varsity squad triumphed in their nail-biter, holding off SI 214-216. Forsyth was the top golfer in the victory for the young Warriors, shooting a 38.
Meanwhile, the varsity suffered a close defeat against the Wildcats, falling 195-212. However, the squad successfully rebounded, finishing off a season sweep of Archbishop Riordan with a 188-203 triumph. The Warriors were defeated by Sacred Heart Cathedral, despite a superb round by Warnock, and concluded their season with a tough loss against one of the league’s top teams, Junipero Serra.
“Although it’s not reflected in the wins and losses, we are excited about our success this season,” said Warnock. “We plan on building a VC golf dynasty.”
