VC Girls Run Away with WCAL Track Championship

   by Corban Fennell

Serra High School was the host site for the WCAL track finals, where the Valley Christian girls literally ran away with the victory. Senior Khrystal Carter and sophomore Dahlys Marshall led the way as the Lady Warriors swept the ten running events. Carter and Marshall each won four events, including combining on a pair of relay victories. Freshman Poppy Lawman pulled off wins in the 800 and 1600, and fellow freshman Jen Bergman triumphed in the 3200. In addition, senior Dominique Hunsucker took first in the 100. The girls’ unprecedented, record-breaking sweep had never been done before, and finely culminated a superb season.

Track and field, with many new runners and old runners, with victories and defeats, through good weather and  bad weather, this year has overall been a good year for the team. As the season comes to an end we took time to speak with the seniors from the team about their previous years of running and favorite memories.

Dominique Hunsucker stated that his favorite memory was the Arcadia meet when he ran the 100-meter dash. This meet was memorable meet for him because of the outstanding time he ran it in, a 10.8 second run. Next was Carter who explained to us what she feels about her years of track at Valley Christian. She said, “I’m excited and disappointed about being my last year. I’m excited because college comes after, and disappointed because I know that there is so much more I am going to accomplish on the track. My favorite memory is winning state meet and seeing the look on my families’ and coaches’ faces after the race. Honestly there is not just one thing I have learned.” Carter also explained that, Coach Greg Marshall, also referred to as “Uncle” by many of his athletes, has taught her so much in her last three years of running track that it is unbelievable. Carter concluded by saying, my track and field experience at Valley has been wonderful and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.” To all of the seniors on the team, Valley  sincerely appreciates all the tremendous work.
