Valley Band Shines
Valley Holds the Heavy and Low of the Local Music Scene
by Brittany Cole

Who would guess that such talent lies within our very own Valley Christian. As some students may know, a band called Heavy Heavy Low Low emerged this past February.

HHLL consists of current Valley students- Chris Fritter (drums) and Andrew Fritter (bass), and a Valley alumni- Danny Rankin (guitar), and aside from Valley students there is Robbie Dalla (guitar), Matthew Caudle and Riley McTigel (both vocals). With their influences including bands such as The Daughters, Everytime I Die, The Number 12 Looks Like You, Chinese Stars, and Bjork, HHLL has quite a unique style. They describe themselves as a “spastic mix of experimental hardcore and grind.” After such a description, it is easy to believe that their shows are full of energy, not only from the uncontrolled drive of the band but also from the exuberant, devoted fans “moshing” to the music.

An intriguing insight that may surprise newcomers to the HHLL scene, is that the vocals are done solely on improv- so Matthew and Riley create their lyrics on the spot. With their inspiration ranging from something that’s troubling them or something funny that happened to them, you can expect to be caught off guard. Being the epitome of surprise, HHLL leaves the audience hanging on for what they will do next. This unpredictable edge adds to the chaotic atmosphere and is sure to attract anyone’s attention.

Although the boys have to balance music and the rest of their life, they would all agree the end result is well worth it. Chris says his favorite part is being on stage and looking out into the crowd of fans appreciating their music. He says their energy at shows is just so incredible and entirely rewarding. While HHLL’s future may be uncertain due to the vast, uniqueness of their style, Chris says he would love more than anything to just tour all the time. Then if all goes as planned, HHLL may not just be some ‘local band’ for long, so now’s the time to grab a friend and head out to a show.
