VCHS Awarded National Honor
U.S. Department of Education recognizes nation’s finest
by Sabrina Kilmer

Valley Christian High School truly does stand alone when compared to all other private high schools in California. Valley was the only private high school to receive the “No Child Left Behind” Blue Ribbon School National Honor this year. Only thirty-five other high schools in the entire nation have ever received this award. To even be considered for this honor, academic achievements must be in the top ten percent in the United States, which is calculated by the annual SATs.

Mr. Michael Ainslie, chair of VCS Board Academic Committee, and Mr. Jonathan Burton, Head Guidance Counselor, sent out e-mails earlier this month to notify and congratulate the VCHS faculty on their amazing accomplishment. The school was notified through a letter sent by the US Department of Education and the California Association of Private School Organizations praising Valley Christian for representing the private school community.

In a recent interview, VCHS Principal Dr. Joel Torode spoke about Valley Christian. “Our school is what we call a comprehensive school. We have a great variety of students, from bright to average and those who struggle. Most other schools just allow those students with above average intelligence to enter,” Dr. Torode explained. “That means that we have Discovery Center students who are also doing extremely well.”

During the Celebration Rally on October 22, Valley was joined by the US Department of Education Representatives and local public officials. These officials commended the administration, faculty, staff, and most of all, students of Valley Christian High School. Dr. Torode announced that he would be taking Mrs. Judy Marc, VCHS teacher, with him to receive the honor. “I am very proud to represent the teachers of Valley Christian High School. We have great teachers here,” Mrs. Marc said, “And I really hope Laura Bush is there!” On November 4-5, Dr. Torode and Mrs. Marc will travel to Washington D.C. to receive the Blue Ribbon National Honor.
