Frosh Football
by Ryan Eshoff
After a defensively dominant
preseason, the Valley Christian freshmen football team opened
WCAL play against rival Archbishop Mitty.
It was the usual fight to the finish with Mitty, with the Monarchs
putting up a second-half rally to edge the Warriors 14-13.
Joseph Morales opened the scoring with a 16-yard burst for a touchdown.
Daniel Carillo contributed the game’s biggest play, a 79-yard
TD scamper in the second quarter, with Wes Norris converting the
PAT. Morales finished with 54 yards rushing, Carillo finished
with 93 yards rushing, and Norris had 64 yards rushing, as well
as 6 tackles. Determination and heart was a huge part of the Warriors’
near victory.
A week of intense practice later, the Warriors hosted Archbishop
Riordan. In yet another amazing showing of standout defense, the
freshmen shut out Riordan 14-0. Touchdown runs by Morales and
by Norris provided the offensive punch that the Warriors needed.
On the weekend of Homecoming, Valley traveled to San Francisco
to engage the St. Ignatius Wildcats. The game was am offensive
shootout, quite different from all the team’s other games.
At home, St. Ignatius was able to just hold on for the 35-28 victory.
The Warriors’ special teams unit stood out in the win, as
they recovered a blocked punt in the end-zone, and returned a
kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown by Carillo, who later contributed
yet another big play, dashing 64 yards for a score. He ran 4 yards
for another.
The team continues to battle each game, and looks forward to more
thrilling competition in the WCAL.
