Junior Varsity Girls Volleyball
by Suzi Wakatsuki

Despite several injuries that handicapped the team, the JV girls volleyball team has done a magnificent job holding their own against the other teams of the West Catholic League. Currently their overall performance has allowed them to maintain an 11-14 win loss record, while their league standing is 5 - 9.

Although the team has no main rivals, it is evident that they try in every game to beat their opponents, whichever team that may be. However, Coach Leisa Moore stated that it would be especially nice if they came away with a victory against Saint Francis or Archbishop Mitty, both of which they have currently not beaten.

It takes guts and a whole lot of grit to play this sport, as can be seen by the girls recovering from game injuries. Sophomore setter Shelly Matsumura sprained her ankle at the start of the season and sophomore teammates Abby Fick and Sherilyn Finch stepped in to fill the void while Matsumura recuperated. The good news is that Matsumura has been cleared to play again, the bad news, however, is that sophomore Tessa Furtado came away with a broken wrist at the St. Ignatius game.
Despite these injuries the team has kept up its cheerful attitude and continues to strive for excellence. Ms. Moore said with a twinkle in her eye, “This is a great group of fun loving girls.” The unity of the team has only grown since the start of the season, and each day the bond becomes stronger and stronger. The group devotions and partner prayer, that transpires twice a week before practice, allows the girls to grow stronger in their walk with the Lord as well as with their relationship with teammates.

This unity is seen through the efforts of the girls that fight to come away with a victory each and every game. Miss Moore articulates her pride in the girls as they fought tooth and nail against Saint Francis on October 7. Valley came away with a total of 23 points accumulated throughout the two games played and although they did not win, their perseverance to see the game through to the end was truly astounding. “The game was awesome!” Miss Moore exclaimed.
