Lady Warrior Varsity Tennis
Wraps Up League Play
by Steven Giordano
The Valley Christian Lady
Warriors of varsity tennis have completed the 2004 fall sports
regular season with a record of 1-13. Valley Christian’s
third year in this league, the West Catholic Athletic League,
is on of the most competitive in any given sport. This proved
true. The games were often times close with seeming eternity-lasting
rallies featuring amazing plays that awed the onlookers. The team
scores were frequently 4-3 or 5-2, proving the relative equality
of the majority of the competition.
As of early October, the Lady Warriors’ lone win came at
Sacred Heart Cathedral. Starting off on the right foot, the ladies
were up 1-0 even before the first serve was, well, served; a player
from the San Francisco team had not shown up, leading to an automatic
forfeit. The singles were split 2-2 with wins by Alex Yaccurine
and Megan Kuzia. On the doubles side, the Warriors swept the Fightin’
Irish 2-0. Partner pairs, Brittany Brinkman with Alex Fish and
Jolene Harrington with Jesse Wrye, came out strong undeniable
defeating their opponents. Within these wining games, the team
only lost one set. A solid win with five wins in favor of the
Valley Christian team, who were subject to only two losses. This
win broke the tie with Sacred Heart Cathedral for sole possession
of seventh place. Toward the end of the season, several rainouts
had to be replayed in the last week.
To the first time viewer, there is a seemingly eerie quietness
to tennis matches, out of simple common courtesy to the players.
This, however, is not parallel to the play being passive in any
way, which is sometimes a misconception of the sport. The intensity
of each match and every point is relentless. Girls unhesitatingly
sprinting all out for the ball, disregarding the large chain link
fence they are about to smash in to. These girls play with passion,
having fun all along the way. While the last week of the season
was quite hectic with the rescheduling of games, the ladies ended
the week and there league season with a fun filled party to just
relax with the team.
First time coach, Gaye McLaughlin, brought this team together
from the middle of August to November with playoffs.
This 2004 fall tennis season brought Valley Christian girls’
tennis to another level.
